Inspiration: Debbie Millman

June 23rd, 2013

I stumbled across this quote the other day. It’s awesome; eloquently put and just the right side of moving without being hammy. It’s part of Look Both Ways: Illustrated Essays on the Intersection of Life and Design by artist, strategist, and interviewer Debbie Millman. I’ve paid homage in the below image, as this section for me was key, but I would recommend visiting the article on Brain Pickings to hear a speech by Debbie Millman and to see the quote in it’s original context, as part of the main body of the essay.

If you found it as inspiring as me, you may be buying the book too : )

If you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve.

If you imagine less, less will be what you undoubtedly deserve. Do what you love, and don?t stop until you get what you love. Work as hard as you can, imagine immensities, don?t compromise, and don?t waste time. Start now. Not 20 years from now, not two weeks from now. Now.

You know when you see something and you just think, “perfect”. Well, that’s how I felt about these Gauge nyc monogram necklaces. It came to my attention via a Refinery29 post on Facebook and it’s a beaut. I love the simplicity of the design and the 18″ length means it’ll fall nicely over a variety of tops or dresses. The awesome blend of quirky, wearable and cool.

You can buy said lovely from Gauge nyc Etsy shop for $80. It’s not cheap, but their handmade in Brooklyn, so I’m assuming/hoping they’ll last. When looking at the shop if you’re confused by the typeface variations – some are serif and some are sans-serif – you can request the style you prefer, as they described to me over on the Gauge nyc Facebook page. For me it has to be serif all the way and apparently they agree.

What with the featured image being a J, it’s like fate’s telling me something – surely, it’d be rude not to…?

Hot on the tail of brands like Heinz, Cadbury’s have launched Joyville Made where you create your own personalised chocolate bar. Quite a cool idea for a gift for the chocaholic in your life. Also supported with sharing functionality across the site and the ability to upload images straight from Facebook and other social channels.

On Wednesday 9th February 2011 Hoss Gifford and Mr.Bingo spoke at BLAB, a night organised by the folks behind the Northern Digitals. It was immediately clear that both were very creative talents, excellent speakers and we were all in for a treat. While I loved both of their talks and was highly entertained by Mr.Bingo’s hair drawings, skateboarding dogs and observational humour, it was Hoss’ talk that stayed with me. Firstly, I’d like to apologise as it’s taken me awhile to do this post…almost exactly 2 years to the day. That said the points from Hoss’ talk are no less true and no less enjoyable.

Hoss Gifford's presentation title slide

In the time he was on stage he hit on a number of truths and ideas that resounded like a bell, for me anyway. Hoss’ presentation is definitely worth going over and if you ever have the chance to see him speak, I would strongly recommend it. But in case you never can the opportunity, I’ve included ten things that stayed with me from his presentation…since 2011. :)
